battery electric

Fast, quiet and 100% electric. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are what comes to mind for most when thinking about EVs. They are completely powered by their battery, which is recharged by plugging into a power source. While BEVs have a 100+ year history, they are making a resurgence today.

Vehicle

There are a growing number of BEVs to choose from with over 51 models across 11 vehicle classes available in 2023 model year. Tesla continues to dominate the market, but competition is ramping up.

Charging

BEV drivers often opt for level 2 charging (higher voltage and power output charging) to fill their bigger batteries faster. This can add between 12 and 54 miles of range for every hour of charging, which is enough to charge most BEV batteries overnight. Public DC Fast Chargers can also be used on-the-go and take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to charge.

Range

The 2023 Mazda MX-30 battery electric vehicle had the shortest EPA estimated range of 100 miles, while the 2023 Lucid Air G Touring XR AWD had the longest range of 516 miles. The average range of all BEVs for 2023 was 276 miles (average of all trim packages availabe for 2023 model years).

cost

While EVs often cost more upfront, AAA research has shown their total cost over the life of the vehicle is often comparable or even less than traditional gas-powered vehicles. EV owners typically save on operating costs (i.e., fuel and maintenance), while federal, state, and utility incentive programs can help further offset the cost of BEVs.

Emission

BEVs offer the greatest environmental benefits. Studies have shown that while there are higher emissions associated with manufacturing BEVs, their overall emissions over their life are significantly less than gas-powered vehicles.
