Overall Observations

Kia’s new EV6 small crossover is the automaker’s first dedicated electric vehicle. It shares elements – a platform, powertrain, and infotainment and safety features – with Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 EV. The EV6’s assertive exterior design is definitely a head-turner – aerodynamic and curvaceous in the front and rear, with modest front-fender bulges, flush door handles, and aggressively styled wheels. Many of its extensive virtues, however, are concealed beneath the sheet metal.

The EV6 is loaded with high-tech features, such as an ultrafast 800-volt charging system; 3-level adjustable 1-pedal regenerative braking; and plenty of advanced safety features, safety features, some of which are dynamic, like adaptive cruise control that adjusts to road and traffic conditions. The EV6’s has a smooth, responsive drivetrain and delivers a balanced ride, but it’s not particularly sporty to drive. The spacious cabin provides plenty of room for passengers. Other pluses include excellent range and fuel-efficiency ratings, LED headlights and ambient lighting, and good rearview-camera picture quality.

The EV6’s weak points, by comparison, are relatively few: a sloping roofline makes rear entry and exit difficult, limits cargo space, and, along with a small rear window, restricts rear visibility; distracting, difficult-to-use infotainment and HVAC controls; and mixed-quality interior materials, with too much piano-black plastic trim.

Strengths and Weaknesses

AAA’s Recommendation: Whether you own an electric vehicle or a gas-powered car is up to you – and you should consider lots of factors in making that choice. No matter what type of vehicle you’re choosing, we recommend visiting a dealership, test driving one, and asking as many questions as possible to make an informed decision.
