I am considering an electric vehicle and typically keep my cars for 10 years or more. How long do EV batteries last?

John-paul

It has been my experience that most EV batteries last 10 years or more. There are some Tesla models from 2013 still operating normally with the original batteries. Of course, as the batteries age, the range will be reduced. Also, how the batteries are charged can determine longevity. Fast charging can shorten battery life by 10% compared to slow battery charging. Learn more about the different types of EV chargers.

How much does it cost to replace an EV battery or a plug-in hybrid battery, and are the dealers the only qualified repair shops for electric cars?

John-paul

Battery replacement can range from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the vehicle and battery size/capacity. As an example, a Tesla Model 3 pack is on the higher end, costing as much as $18,000. For EVs like the Nissan Leaf, a smaller battery can cost around $4,500. A plug-in Toyota Prius battery could cost up to $7,500. As EVs get more popular, used and remanufactured batteries are becoming more economical options to keep EVs on the road.

Any technician with the proper training, repair data and tools can swap an EV battery.

I spend between $1,000 and $1,500 each year to maintain my cars. Electric cars seem complicated. Do they require less maintenance than gas cars?

John-paul
Yes. EVs have fewer moving parts, no oil changes, no exhaust systems and no spark plugs. Maintenance mainly includes tire rotation and replacement. Brakes tend to last longer, but it still makes good sense to replace brake fluid every three years. The cabin filter still gets dirty and needs replacement. Some EVs have coolant for the batteries and that system needs to be serviced periodically.

I took a Hyundai Ionic 5 for a road test. I liked the car, but the brakes felt weird, almost grabby. This feeling kept me from considering the car.

John-paul
What you are feeling is the transition from regenerative braking to the friction brakes. In an electric car the regenerative brakes do most of the work, in fact in many cases you use one-pedal braking, letting the accelerator slow the car. In every EV that I have driven, the regenerative braking is adjustable. Regenerative braking also helps to charge the battery.

How far can an EV go on a full charge?

John-paul
EV range varies widely. Many years ago, I had an electric car, and if I was lucky, it would go about 50 miles before it needed a charge. Today, the lowest range, typically for entry-level cars, is 150 to 200 miles. My experience is that most mid-range EVs get closer to 300 miles. The top-of-the-line Lucid claims a 500-mile range, and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck has a stated range of 490 miles. Of course, just like a gasoline car, range can vary with temperature and driving style.

AAA’s Recommendation: Whether you own an electric vehicle or a gas-powered car is up to you – and you should consider lots of factors in making that choice. No matter what type of vehicle you’re choosing, we recommend visiting a dealership, test driving one, and asking as many questions as possible to make an informed decision.
